Newton displays a rook’s enthusiasm during his first NFL start. Week 2 will be even more challenging.

Much has been made of the NFL’s top draft pick, CAM NEWTON. Will he live up to the hype? Should he start in his first year or play back-up off the bench? Will he be what everyone thinks he will be? After Newton’s electrifying first game in the NFL (the rook threw for a record 422 yards on 24 of 37 passes with 2 TDs), now peeps want to know if Cam’s debut performance was an aberration or a sign of things to come?
On the same field where he last won the national championship for Auburn, Newton showed the same type of poise, enthusiasm and accuracy on his passes that made him a such a hot NFL commodity last spring. Against the Arizona Cardinals, Carolina Cam became first rookie to throw for more than 400 yards in his NFL opener. Now that’s the way you want to start your career. Well, almost. Carolina lost the game, 28-21.
But Cam showed much promise in his first start. Witness his first-ever NFL touchdown pass to wideout Steve Smith that went for 77 yards…
Great poise in the pocket amid collapsing defensive pressure…and look at the accuracy on the throw.
Now comes yet another Cam question. What can he do for an encore?
We’ll certainly find out this Sunday. Newton makes his Carolina home debut against the Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers. Talk about tough tests. Arizona was quite a feat for Carolina Cam, but Green Bay is the Beyonce of NFL defenses. Newton will need a Jay-Z performance to get the Panthers their first win of the year.
With every question answered about Cam Newton, another one surfaces. Yet the Panthers organization believes they have found the answer at quarterback for their franchise…and Carolina Cam is that man.
