Lucas Duda, David Wright and Ike Davis model the Mets “new” uniforms for 2012. They need a winning model.

As Major League Baseball settles into its off season, several teams have decided to get the jump on holiday merchandising by unveiling new uniforms for next season during this Xmas season. The New York Mets unveiled their “new” digs during a ceremony at CitiField…
Ummm…these uniforms look no different from what the Mets previously wore. Except for the new 50th anniversary patch (commemorating a half century of Mets baseball), it’s the same old, same old for NY’s “other” team…
In Baltimore, the Orioles have decided on two alternate jerseys (one orange, one black) to add to their home and away collection. The two version cap offering is a nice touch (I like the bird caps myself)…
The Florida Marlins are changing unis and their name—to the Miami Marlins—as the team focuses on being more localized. The new digs showcase the familiar Marlins colors but with a bold, new text design featuring a Miami-type flair…
In San Diego, the Padres also have decided on the two version jersey alternates to accompany the home whites and away greys. The blue batting jersey with the “SD” design is a nice switch. Don’t know if I can say the same for the camouflage earth tones…are we playing baseball or fighting a war?
A new look is sometimes good…keeps things interesting. But for these particular teams, I think a change in on-field performance should be the focus. The Mets (77-85), Marlins (72-90), Padres (71-91) and Orioles (69-93) were a combined 289-359 last year.
I’d call this new uniform campaign “Duds for Scrubs.”
