Just when he was beginning to play well, just on the eve of the playoffs, METTA WORLD PEACE (yeah, right) goes ballistic after a fastbreak dunk and levels OKC’s JAMES HARDEN with a vicious elbow to the side of the head in Sunday’s Lakers-Thunder match-up at Staples…
Peace (none given) exhalted after making a momentum play but got carried away during his bravado when he proceeded to clear space between him and Harden, who happened to have his noggin in direct line with MWP’s elbow. The play resulted in a flagrant two foul and automatic ejection from the game.
We all know MWP’s reputation. He isn’t exactly the most stable person in the world. My take on it is he wanted to clear space between him and Harden. The blow was definitely intentional but the location of the blow was not. Harden was later diagnosed with a mild concussion.
Metta World (can’t say the last part right now) tweeted this response to his actions:
I believe MWP’s intensity level rose when Perkins hit him in the nose earlier in the game, breaking his nose. That caused the Lakers forward to retaliate in celebration of the dunk play with the elbow but didn’t intend to hit Harden in the head, though the act of swinging his elbow was certainly intended.
Regardless of all that, Metta is most certainly going to be suspended. And taking into account his reputation, I suspect his ouster from the league will be heavy. Maybe 10 games. As for Harden, his playing status is unknown but having suffered a concussion he may miss some time for OKC. Needless to say, Harden has been lights out for the Thunder this season. (Oh…was that a poor choice of words? My bad)
With the playoffs less than a week away, yesterday’s unfortunate development is not news the Lakers or Thunder want to hear.
