I ain’t afraid of no jinx: Calvin Johnson will bravely head into next season as the coverboy for Madden 13.

Detroit Lions receiver CALVIN JOHNSON bested Carolina Panthers QB CAM NEWTON in the final online voting for the honor of gracing the cover of  EA Sports’ Madden 13 video game cover on Wednesday in Times Square.

The Megatron cover was revealed on ESPN2 SportsNation Wednesday evening with Johnson garnering 52% of the 651,763 final votes cast. Both players were on hand for the winning announcement.

Megabummed: Cam Newton was just a little bummed at losing out to Megatron.

“The people voted, man, the people voted,” Johnson said in accepting the Madden cover honor. “They got what they wanted. And I am very grateful for that. This means a lot. Oh, man, this is great. Growing up, watching (John) Madden all the time, playing ‘Madden’ all the time…”

As for Carolina Cam, who last week began a youtube campaign to win cover honors over Johnson, the defeat was painful.

“I thought you guys loved me,” Newton told the New York crowd. ‘I’m just teasin’.”

Yeah right. Newton was megacrushed. But Cam can take comfort in knowing it’s Johnson who will have to deal with the so-called Madden curse this season.
